SIMONE JONES: Within Distance

Opening Reception Saturday, September 6th, 2014, 2pm –6pm
Exhibition Runs: September 6th – September 27th, 2014

Christopher Cutts Gallery is pleased to present Simone Jones’ video installation WITHIN DISTANCE.

Simone Jones is a multidisciplinary artist who works in a variety of mediums including film, video, sculpture, and electronics. Her work investigates the nature of perception: she questions how we see and translates what we see through various techniques of representation.

WITHIN DISTANCE consists of a two part video projection that plays in separate spaces simultaneously. The projections, one static and one kinetic, depict two narratives that are intertwined yet never occupy the same space. This method is utilized to encourage the viewer to actively piece together a narrative through the reception of visual and auditory hints.

Michael Polubiec, who curated the piece at the Doris McCarthy Gallery in 2013 stated, “By dismantling the highly controlled environment of cinema into a set of distinct yet interrelated components, Jones develops a new way for viewers to experience the apparatus of cinematic production”.

Jones has exhibited her work at national and international venues. Jones graduated from the Ontario College of Art (OCA) with a concentration in Experimental Art and received her MFA in Sculpture Installation from York University in Toronto. Jones was the Jill Kraus Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, with a joint appointment in the School of Art and Robotics from 2000-2003. Jones is currently an Associate Professor of Art at OCAD University, Toronto, where she teaches in the Integrated Media Program.

Jones wishes to acknowledge the support of the Ontario Arts Council in the production of Within Distance.
